Language

The By Heart word for this week will be it and the colour word is purple. During the middle of the week the students will have an opportunity to make other words using the word it. I want the students to know the word, rather than sounding it out and then by placing a simple consonant at the beginning of the word it learn that other words can be made. For example, bit, fit, hit, kit, lit, pit, and sit.

Parents can assist their child with this skill by printing the word it on a card and asking the child to state the word. Then place a b in front of the word it and ask them to figure out the word. Continue to do this using the following consonants: b, f, h, k,l, p, s.

Many of the students are attempting to use this stretching and blending the sounds. Other students experience some difficulty so you may have to blend the sounds together and ask them to state the word.
For example, b  it. Please do not break the word it into sounds.

In the area of reading comprehension we will continue with the strategy retell. Fairy tales are the easiest for the students to begin with and then move into stories.
