Mathematics - Two-Dimensional Shapes

To finish up the mathematical unit on patterning, I purchased some coloured beads for the children to create a repeated pattern necklace or bracelet either for themselves or for their Mom. So Mom be sure to wear the bracelet or necklace with pride for a day or two.

The children will be introduced to two-dimensional shapes. The children will have opportunities to explore, sort, and compare traditional and non-traditional shapes. For example, the children may decide to sort all the triangles together. I will take this opportunity to ask the child(ren), "do you see any other shapes that remind you of this shape?" Challenge the children by giving them three strips of paper to create a triangle and to then use the strips to show something that is not a triangle.
The children's thinking will be extended by me placing some objects inside a sorting circle (hula hoop) and asking the children to tell what they notice about all of the things inside the circle. I will also challenge them to "tell what rule I was using to sort them? What else could be added to this group."
