Writing in the Kindergarten Classroom
Writing in the Kindergarten classroom is incorporated into many of the centres on a daily basis. I already gave a wonderful example of how it is incorporated into the pet shop. Another example is when the children are in the construction area building, designing with the large and foam blocks, building with Lego or using any other of the building materials.
Once the students have finished building, designing or creating something they get a clipboard, pencil and draw what they made. After they have finished their drawing they come to me and together we stretch out the sounds and they write what they have made. Next the students read back what they have written and point to the words. During sharing time, the students have an opportunity to share their work and learning with the whole class. They really enjoy this part and everyone claps to show their appreciation to the author.
The finished product is posted in the classroom to encourage other students to do the drawing and writing. I have taken a few pictures to show what the students have created so far.
A boat. I asked him to list what he used and he wrote hard blocks and soft blocks.

I made a boat.

A structure and he used big blocks and soft blocks.

This is a machine you put wood in to.
Station and a track.

The students are encouraged to write the sounds they hear and to not worry about the spelling. The By Heart words I want them to spell correctly. The research shows that if young children are worried about spelling the words correctly then this will inhabit their writing ideas.

Many of the students do this writing and are proud of their work. I think all this writing is remarkable for Kindergarten students to do early in November.
